WARNING: This blog contains triggering content on suicide.

No one would ever guess that a common prescription medication for treating a non-life threatening hair loss condition of male pattern baldness or androgenic alopecia in men could trigger extreme life-altering side effects leading to dissatisfaction with life in general and even, in some cases, suicide.

This blog delves into the realities of hair loss in men and the side effects of oral Finasteride based on a shocking CBC/Radio-Canada investigation. This was a six-month investigation done on men who were on Finasteride, who shared the side effects they experienced even after they stopped the treatment.

But before we delve into the side effects, let's understand the basics of Finasteride and its uses.

What is Finasteride?

finasteride

Finasteride is a common prescription drug for hair loss. Millions of men worldwide take this medication, which is said to slow hair loss and aid new hair growth.

Often known by the brand name Propecia, Finasteride for hair loss is used in 3 ways:

  • Topical finasteride
  • Oral Finasteride
  • Finasteride and Minoxidil sprays

Other uses of Finasteride

Pharmaceutical multinational Merck invented Finasteride. It was intended to treat enlarged prostates but had the unintended side effect of prompting hair growth, making it a household name in the hair loss world.

Does finasteride regrow hair?

Finasteride for hair loss is an effective medication for regrowing hair. It blocks the conversion of several hormones and neurosteroids in the brain, affecting hair loss.

Is Finasteride also for women?

Finasteride is FDA-approved for treating male-pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia) but not female-pattern hair loss. However, it is sometimes used off-label (non-FDA-approved use).

The use of Finasteride for women is limited due to potential teratogenic effects and is generally recommended for postmenopausal women or those not planning to become pregnant.

Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should not use finasteride or handle crushed or broken tablets, as Finasteride can cause congenital disabilities in male babies.

What are the common finasteride side effects?

finasteride effects

According to most medical sites, these are the common known side-effects of Finasteride:

  • Inability to have or maintain an erection
  • decreased sexual desire
  • problems with ejaculation (including decreased volume of ejaculate)
  • pain in the testicles
  • Depression
  • changes in the breasts, such as increased size, lumps, pain, or nipple discharge
  • rash
  • itching
  • hives
  • swelling of the lips and face
  • difficulty breathing or swallowing
  • Taking finasteride may increase the risk that you will develop high-grade prostate cancer (a type of prostate cancer that spreads and grows more quickly than other types of prostate cancer) or breast cancer.

People on Finasteride are warned that It may cause other side effects, some of which can be serious. They are advised to call their doctor if they have unusual problems while taking this medication.

The manufacturer and pharmaceutical companies still maintain that Finasteride is a safe drug and that extreme side effects are rare. They also maintain that side effects vanish after one stops the medication.

However, a shocking report by CBC/Radio-Canada reveals men taking the hair loss drug Finasteride have been facing debilitating side effects.

Here are a few of the investigation's eye-opening findings, which will make you think twice before you take another finasteride pill.

Side-effects of Finasteride that not many are talking about:

Twenty-five men who spoke with CBC/Radio Canada during a six-month investigation into the hair loss medication finasteride reported experiencing lasting sexual, psychological, and physical side effects that persisted for months or even years after they stopped using the drug. Some never seemed to recover from it yet.

This prolonged side effects condition is often referred to as a post-finasteride syndrome, or PFS, experienced by men who still experience the drug's side effects more than five months after cessation.

Loss of libido, erectile dysfunction, and infertility were common themes, but what needs equal attention is the cognitive and physical issues, anxiety, insomnia, depression, and, in many cases, suicidal ideation.

According to Health Canada, “Male breast cancer has been reported in a small number of patients worldwide taking the prescription drug finasteride for male pattern baldness and enlarged prostate.”

Tragic Case of Marc Turner, a young man who was on Finasteride for hair loss

Like many young men facing hair loss or balding, Marc Turner, a 35-year-old Mississauga, Ontario resident, was prescribed Finasteride in the fall of 2020 after being warned by his doctor of the common side effects and that the symptoms would cease when he stopped the medication.

This was far from what he experienced.

Marc was very excited to start Finasteride and get back his lost hair. He knew it was a lifelong drug but had great hopes of it working. Little did he know that a year and a half after his first dose of finasteride, he would end his life because of the brutal side effects of Finasteride.

Recalling his turmoil, Marc’s mother, Denise Turner, spoke about how her son started feeling funny feelings in his head, like brain fog or something, just three weeks after starting finasteride. When Marc lowered his dose, the side effects got worse. After a few months of which, he quit completely.

What followed was a spiral of disaster faced by her once completely healthy son. As warned, the loss of his sexual functions continued, and fatigue, anxiety, tinnitus, and a plethora of physical symptoms accompanied it. The worst of them was anhedonia - the inability to feel emotions. He'd say, 'I can't feel it anymore, mom. There's no comfort anywhere.”

Marc went on to find references online to thousands of other men sharing the same symptoms he had, ailments they all attributed to finasteride. It was scary that none of them were recovering from it. Neither did Marc, who left behind a diary of his struggles and a warning message to other men facing hair loss.

"There have been too many people's lives destroyed, families devastated, and suicides because of a drug for a cosmetic purpose," Marc wrote. "This cannot be tolerated any longer."

Other men on Finasteride share a similar ordeal.

Another victim of the side effects of finasteride is Michael, a British Columbia man who says his symptoms have lasted more than 15 years. During the investigation, he says. "It's a complete chemical castration where you have no chemical reaction to anything sexual, anything in life. You are suddenly living in black and white while everyone else is still in color."

Wei Wong, a 29-year-old Montrealer, began experiencing similar symptoms after about 10 days of using topical finasteride. "Most of the sources I consulted never mentioned the possibility of persistent side effects," he said.

A common concern among men is that the medication has cost them their relationships, their family, and their career. In this investigation, some cases were reported by the families of men who took their own lives; Marc Turner was not the only one who lost his life to finasteride. This is a serious problem. There is definitely a need for deeper awareness among users and more research and investigation from organizations without the backing or funding of pharmaceutical companies for a less skewed perspective.
